A book review: Seven Days in June by Tia Williams

Book Summary

A romantic, heart-breaking novel about love and second chances, family, and mental health. Eva and Shane are two famous best-selling authors; she writes erotica fiction and he is an award-winning novelist. Both reunite unexpectedly after being apart for fifteen years. Fans of their books have no idea that Eva and Shane have been secretly writing about each other in their stories ever since they separated. This story takes place over the course of seven days reconnecting, reminiscing, and falling for each other all over again.

Book Review

I was hooked by the first humorous line of this book. I love the author's writing style as it is done with such ease and relaxation with a lot of pop culture and modern references. She is also very open and raw with her emotional writing with heavy topics such as mental health, anxiety, drug, and substance abuse, illness, grief, and sexual abuse. There is also sexual chemistry and steamy scenes between Eva and Shane that were appreciated but I thought there would be more. From what I've heard on social media about this book, a lot of people loved it and I didn't LOVE it but I didn't hate it either. I still enjoyed this story for what it represents and that is more than a steamy scene between two characters; for me, that's nice here and there in a book for entertainment purposes. This book also touches on Black representation in the media and publishing industry, womanhood, and family generations. It was admirable to have Eva's character be a strong, single mother with her daughter, Audre (my favorite character), and see what she overcame from her troubled childhood. Eva and Shane had decent character growth. Shane struggled with commitment and we learn why that is. He's faced with a difficult situation that ends in heartbreak and a decision he has to make about being in a relationship with Eva since patterns arise and secrets are revealed.

The chapters are good lengths, however, I felt like the epilogue was a tad too long and sometimes, the story was slow. The pace picked up to me when Eva and Shane reunited with the steamy scenes and found out why they lost touch over the years but sometimes, I was okay with putting the book down. This is still an enjoyable, decent read!
