A Book Review: The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley

Book Summary

A whodunit mystery with a group of friends in an isolated cabin celebrating New Year's Eve. Secrets and lies are kept within certain friendships and tension starts to arise. Suddenly, one of them is found dead and it has been confirmed that it was no accident. The hunt begins; whose body was found and who is responsible for such a crime?

Book Review

What a way to ring in the new year! I enjoyed the concept of this story since whodunits are one of my favorite genres, however, they can be somewhat predictable. I loved the POV chapters and the back-and-forth timeline between New Year's Eve (before) and New Year's Day (after). I kept making my own predictions which is always the fun part of a good whodunit mystery, but to see if I was right was more of the motivation to finish the book. Although the author did a good job of making it seem like it can easily be someone else, I knew that would have been too easy to be true. This is my first Lucy Foley book and I liked her writing. I've read better thriller/mystery books to captivate jaw-dropping, page-turning moments, and this book did not have much of that. It still kept me hooked but not enough to leave me gasping or shocked. The ending was okay, but I wish a last POV chapter from the killer after the reveal would have been interesting!

3.5 stars:

- this book is a good intro to get into this specific genre

- POV chapters

- dual timeline

- whodunit/ thriller

- good chapter length

- winter vibes

- great writing

- a tad predictable

Enjoy and happy reading!
