Book Lovers by Emily Henry Book Review

Book Summary

A contemporary romance story about somewhat enemies to lovers, Nora and Charlie, who both work in the publishing industry as their lives entail everything about books. As a literary agent, Nora cares only for her clients and her darling little sister, Libby. Charlie is an editor who takes his job seriously. When these two book lovers meet, it's not the greatest of first impressions, causing Nora and Charlie to not like each other. Nora sleeps, breathes, and eats her job in fast-paced city life, leading Libby to decide that they both should escape and slow down to a small town in North Carolina for a month's vacation. Nora finally agrees and since it's such a small town, she inevitably and coincidentally keeps running into Charlie. This act would be cute if it was not done several times during her vacation, but long and behold, it becomes a story they've written themselves, getting to know each other and falling for one another, once upon a time.

Book Review

Emily Henry is becoming the queen of writing amazing female lead characters. She is also starting to be one of my go-to book authors to buy and add to my collection immediately! I will be honest, People We Meet On Vacation is my least favorite book of hers, but Book Lovers and Beach Read are my preferred books by her. She captivated Nora's character to be completely relatable and authentic. I found myself to be similar to who the character is; a passionate, independent woman focused on her career and caring for others deeply, putting those she loves needs first before her own. Do I need to even mention Nora's love for books? She has my dream job of working in an environment she is passionate about and living in the city! Then, we have Charlie, another book boyfriend to add to my list of a few, haha! He falls for Nora and his genuine character is everything you want the lead male character to be; funny, caring, humble, honest, kind, loving, and more. He also has the need to put others before himself in common with Nora and this develops an emotional connection between these two characters.

I won't say I am in love with Emily Henry's writing, but I admire her style of emotional writing. Her stories are always told in first-person, which I absolutely love! She does a great job making the reader connect with the main character and having something to relate to while also being in that emotion she is capturing in the scene. For example, Emily Henry has a common theme of grief in her stories, something any reader can relate to. The imagery she paints is well done, and with the sentiment of feeling sadness or happiness, love, anger, or any other emotion, Emily Henry does a great job portraying it. Anytime I finish a chapter, I'm captivated by what I just read, leaving me breathless from an emotional thought from a character or a scene, or wanting to turn the page after reading a steamy scene. (This book has some steamy lovin'!) Her writing is simple enough to follow the story she is telling and can leave the reader feeling resonated and content with the characters and the book as a whole.

"I read once that sunflowers always orient themselves to face the sun. That's what being near Charlie Lastra is like for me. There could be a raging wildfire toward me from the west and I'd still be straining eastward toward his warmth."

- Emily Henry, "Book Lovers"

I recommend reading this book first or after Beach Read, if you love everything book-related and two characters falling for each other in a small-town romance setting.

Enjoy and happy reading!
