Book Summary:
"Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady - ah, lady of a certain age - who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco's Chinatown. Despite living alone, Vera is not needy, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to.
Then, one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing- a dead man in the middle of her tea shop. In this outstretched hand, a flash drive. Vera doesn't know what comes over her, but after calling the cops like any good citizen would, she sort of... swipes the flash drive from the body and tucks it safely into the pocket of her apron. Why? Because Vera is sure she would do a better job than the police absolutely could; because nobody sniffs out a wrong-doing quite like a suspicious Chinese mother with time on her hands. Vera knows the killer will be back for the flash drive; all she has to do is watch the increasing number of customers at her shop and figure out which one among them is the killer. What Vera does not expect is to form friendships with her customers and start to care for each and every one of them. As a protective mother hen, will she end up having to give one of her newfound chicks to the police?" - storygraph
Book Review:
What a fun, cozy mystery, whodunit story! This delightful narrative weaves together intriguing plotlines and charming characters, making it an absolute treat for readers who relish a good puzzle. I think this is particularly great for fans of Finlay Donnovan and the delightful series Only Murders in the Building, as it captures a similar blend of humor and suspense that keeps you guessing until the very last page! It’s a refreshing choice if you’re looking for a reading cleanse, especially if you find yourself needing a break from a specific genre that has perhaps become too familiar or if you’re struggling to escape a reading slump. This book offers a perfect escape, allowing you to dive into a world where every clue matters and every character has a story to tell. I love the author's witty writing style, which not only entertains but also gives the characters substantial emotional depth. The humor is sharp and clever, providing a lighthearted tone that balances the more serious undertones of the mystery. I found myself particularly drawn to Vera, the protagonist, whose quirks and vulnerabilities made her incredibly relatable. I wanted to hug Vera so much, feeling a genuine connection to her struggles and triumphs throughout the narrative. The author does an exceptional job of crafting a story that immerses you in its world, making you feel as if you are right there alongside the characters, experiencing their adventures and misadventures firsthand. I was immersed and entertained the whole time! The pacing of the story is just right, with twists and turns that keep you on your toes while still allowing you to savor the delightful moments of character interaction and development. An enjoyable, funny, mysterious page-turner, the best kind! This book strikes a perfect balance between lighthearted fun and engaging mystery, making it a must-read for anyone who enjoys a good whodunit with a dash of humor and heart.
