Go Back to Your Country (or stay & defy all odds) by Issa Musharbash Book Review

The Break-Down:

It has been a while since I read a non-fiction book but I am happy I have given this one a chance. This memoir tells Issa's story of growing up and overcoming so many challenges from such a young age. At just 12 years old, he learned how it felt to be judged and ridiculed based on looks and race. He also learned the true definition of working hard and never giving up. Issa embraced everything America stands for; believing and pursuing after your dreams and striving for success to accomplish your goals. Issa's journey is one that most people can find something to connect with on a personal and emotional level.

Review:

The cover was intriguing to me at first. When I started reading chapter after chapter, it became clear to me what the cover of this book can be seen as. In my opinion, it can be seen as Issa breaking through the harsh prejudices he faced growing up and overcoming those challenges he pushed himself to take. Issa's perseverance is something I admired about him from this book. My favorite moments were his Toys R US job and doing what was necessary to take care of the love of his life, the woman he met in high school, and was determined to make her his wife one day. I thought their love story was absolutely adorable!

I appreciated how his Jersey City/Bayonne background felt relatable to me. I grew up in the same town so I loved the personal connection and references I was familiar with. I used to attend the church Issa became involved with and I respect it so much. I graduated from the same high school Issa attended. I went to that Toys R US store several times as a little girl. These specific details in Issa's life hit home for me and as a reader, I enjoy something I can remember and connect with.

I recommend this book to any reader who enjoys memoirs/non-fiction genres and to those who may want to get into this specific kind of book for the first time. This is a very simple read with quick chapters and an easy story to follow that most people will find a way to relate to the author.
