In Five Years by Rebecca Serle Book Review

Book Summary

A different kind of romance story with a strong focus on friendship. Dannie lives her life by numbers, sticking to her plans of landing her dream career and being with her boyfriend. She has her five-year plan pretty much mapped out, a tough question of, "Where do you see yourself in five years?", already set in her mind. As expected, her boyfriend finally proposes to Dannie and when they go home after celebrating, Dannie falls asleep and has a bizarre premonition - she's in a different apartment on the opposite side of the city with a man who is not her recent fiance, and it happens to be five years later. This 2025 dream feels too real! When she wakes up, she is back to her familiar life and is literally dazed and confused.

Book Review

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I thought this book was eh, an okay read. At least it was not a DNF book! I did find the friendship between Dannie and her BFF Bella beautiful (similar to the movie, Beaches), but I think I was just expecting a different type of story, a story where the main character is stuck in the five years ahead and has to make a decision, something more dramatic I guess. There is an emotional depth to the story relating to health, but to me, this was just a simple story where nothing stood out to me, not even a quote, and I did not relate to the main character, Dannie, at all. It covered important themes of friendship, family, loyalty, health, grief, and fate. It also included quick chapters and simple writing. If anything, the sadness and grief as a theme were relatable, I just didn't think this was an outstanding book.

If you need a light read about friendship, this book is for you!
