"Twins, inseparable as children, ultimately choose to live in two very different worlds: one black and one white."
This emotional novel tells the story of Desiree and Stella Vignes, twin sisters who struggle with their identities due to their race in a small town. One sister can pass as white. At just sixteen years old, they run away to New Orleans in the hope of new lives but one twin sister made a realization that she is her own person and would rather live an effortless lifestyle by embracing her own identity, and decides to run away. Their separate lives unravel as each chapter follows their stories and what occurred during their separation. Eventually, both twins have daughters of their own who meet and discover they have a lot more in common than they think. This discovery allows the twins to reunite about twenty-thirty years later.
I really enjoyed this novel and I see why it is the best seller this year. This novel pairs so well with the last book I read, (White Fragility), as it covers themes of racism, gender, identity, acceptance, and more. It is relevant to what is going on today. I was hooked right from the beginning. Bennett's writing is delicate and subtle that gives the perfect imagery of what is going on in each chapter. Each chapter writes more about memories that relate to the current situation the characters' are experiencing. It is interesting how the author tells this story of struggles. I sympathize with certain characters but I never felt emotionally attached to them, just their story. It's one of those books that was okay if I stepped away from it for a bit. It's not that I wanted to, I was just consumed with school priorities too, but I digress. Once I picked the book right back up, it was easy to remember what I had previously read. I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars and I recommend it to those who are interested in an emotional, family, coming of age story.
Enjoy and Happy reading!
