The Watch Dog by Sandy Lo Book Review

*The Break-Down

Garrett “Rett” Baker has taken one too many wrong turns in life that slams him into a dead-end. He finds himself forced to return to his small-town life in middle Tennessee where he left behind broken relationships and bad memories. With plans to leave as soon as he saves some cash, Garrett finds himself living in his deceased grandmother’s home while he tries to avoid cold shoulders from his family. Bittersweet memories come rushing back to Garrett, and the ghosts of his past begin to haunt him. The one thing from his childhood he keeps trying to find–his long gone mutt, Brownie, seems to be what is leading him to places he doesn’t want to go, and people he never wanted to see again. One of those people being Cori Davis -- the chubby redhead girl he once bullied grew into a feisty woman who had all eyes and ears on her whenever she opened her mouth to sing. Rett finds himself facing every single one of his demons as he tries to figure out what his spirit guide dog is trying to tell him. "The Watch Dog" is an emotional story of redemption, unconditional love, and acceptance.

The Review

Another Sandy Lo book I enjoyed so much! What a great book to start the Fall season! The cover is vibrant with the perfect Fall orange/yellow colors that are stunning, (this book was originally published 11 years ago and is being reissued with a new cover), and the spooky vibe this story has is not as intense or scary but more endearing and heartfelt. I was hooked right from the beginning. Sandy introduced a complex character so well because I did not like Rett at first but eventually, he grew on me as the story progressed. There are other characters I am not a fan of either but Rett's story is a complicated, relatable, authentic story that kept my attention well enough to accept other characters and their storylines. The romance has that right amount of a slow burn where it is not dragging with a steady, flowing pace. The character development from Rett specifically is what made me like and appreciate him. The connection that he builds with other characters to seek forgiveness and shows that he can change in a positive and better way is valid. He adapts to the environment of his home life he chose to run away from and comes back with a different, brighter perspective on things. Brownie, his literal spirit dog, is a great addition to the story. The dog guides Rett in the right direction to not only seek encouragement for himself but to help others. I appreciated this aspect so much! Anyone can relate to this relationship with their pets and understand the vulnerabilities of losing a pet. The supernatural element is perfect to get into the Halloween spirit but the fun, cute side of it instead of the terrifying kind, haha!

I love Sandy's writing; she is a natural storyteller and is so good at hooking the reader right at the beginning and keeping that attention. Her writing has the right amount of emotional connection with a personal touch. It is simple to follow and as much as this book is gravitating, I took my time with it to truly enjoy the story. It's a good book to read quickly too!

I recommend this book to those who enjoy Contemporary Fiction / Romance / Paranormal genres and a story of personal and emotional connections. Sandy Lo is a great author to get into! This is the second book I am reading of hers and it was not disappointing! I read Dream Catchers and wrote a review on it! Check it out under the By The Book Category!
