The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon Book Review

This book stands out in such a unique way. It is a mix of everything a creepy vibe entails; horror, suspense, thriller, mystery, and more. The story takes place in Vermont, which is where the author, Jennifer McMahon currently lives. A woman named Sara Harrison Shea, who, in 1908, was found dead behind her house months later after the horrible death of her daughter. (Not a spoiler! It is explained very early in the story). After Sara's death, someone releases the pages of her personal diary that tells Sara's story about people called "sleepers" who can come back from the dead that is also identified as "the winter people."

If you are interested to learn about Sara's past, Ruthie's present, what exactly "sleepers" are, and love creepy/thriller novels like me, then I highly recommend "The Winter People" by Jennifer McMahon. I see why it is such a highly popular book! Each chapter is told from different characters so you can grasp their perspectives, but it was done differently in this particular book. Some characters' chapters are told in the first person and others are not. It can get a little confusing sometimes to keep up with all of the characters, but there are never questions left unanswered. It tells Sara's story about people called "sleepers" who can come back from the dead that is also identified as "the winter people."

The time frame goes back and forth between the early 1900s and the present day. Through each time period, you meet several characters and learn their stories in the chapters. I personally love stories that have every chapter as different characters so you can grasp their perspectives.

As you're following their stories, you learn that in a mysterious way everyone connects together, specifically a character named Ruthie who discovers Sara's pages. I am also a huge fan of stories that create scenarios between the past and present to make a major connection that keeps you turning each page and intrigues the reader to find out how everything exactly ties together. Jennifer writes simply while creating the perfect imagery to draw in her audience and sets the creepy tone accurately. Jennifer's story grabbed my attention immediately with her writing and the layout of the story (diary entries, past and present time frame).

Enjoy and Happy Reading!
