My self-care routine consists of feeling at ease by enjoying a compelling story surrounded by the aroma of bubbles and a lovely scented candle. "White Fragility" by Robin Diangelo goes in-depth about why the race of white people tend to feel uncomfortable about confronting and discussing racism. A serious book such as this one might be difficult to read and understand. I recommend finding an area where you can focus and take your time to grasp each sentence. Soaking in a warm bubble bath is one of the ways I enjoy reading any type of book and can focus on the content effortlessly.
I decided to read this book to educate myself on the important issues of racism and to comprehend why it is so significant to have serious conversations about topics that might make some people uncomfortable. This is one of the many points Robin makes in her book that I learned progressively from each chapter. Robin uses her personal experiences to draw a picture for the reader in order to prove her points on this sensitive topic. I appreciate that Robin made it very clear that as a white woman, she has acknowledged and taken accountability for her unintentional racial comments she was unaware were racist. Accepting these mistakes does not make you racist. Having discussions on racism does not make you racist. Robin also describes the reasons people may have used to avoid this subject and the assumption of being racist. Overall, I believe Robin's book delivers assurance for those who might be uncomfortable with this subject while providing clarity that it's okay to talk about anything that can possibly make us feel that tension.
I did not know this book was written until the recent black lives matter movement. It's even sadder to say that these issues have been around for so many years and are finally recognized today; something needs to be done. It made me even more aware of the privilege I have that comes so easily for white people, including myself. Reading these informative books is a part of my learning process to grow, understand, and communicate what matters and needs to change for the black community.
If you would like to join me in my learning process or want an insight on how to confront racism without being uncomfortable, then I suggest reading "White Fragility" or any similar book that discusses this important concern. Just because something is not trending on the internet at the moment, does not mean things are resolved.
Enjoy and Happy Reading!
